Network Time Protocol is present on virtually all computers and allows systems to synchronise their clocks with a time source over the TCP/IP networks. The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to allow the synchronisation of the time of a computer server to another server or reference time source, such as a radio or satellite receiver or modem.

NTP provides accuracies typically within a millisecond on a LAN network and to a few tens of a millisecond on a WAN Network relative to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) via a Global Positioning Service (GPS) receiver.
